You have uprooted your life to move to Canada and now that you’re here, you might feel like you are starting from scratch. This is both an incredible opportunity and challenge. A big part of many new Canadians’ anxiety stems from a lack of community and friends in their new life. The good news is that Canadians are known around the world for being polite and kind! Newcomers is committed to more than just helping you find a job, we want to help you build a life in Canada. Keep reading for a few pointers regarding how you can build new friendships in Canada.
Socializing with Colleagues
You will be spending a big chunk of your life at work, so why not get to know your colleagues? In Canada the average full-time position requires a 40-hour work week. You will be eating lunch and spending your breaks alongside the people you work with – consider getting to know them on a personal level. Interacting with colleagues at the workplace in a positive nature and engaging in small talk may lead to new Canadian friendships. In Canada it is not unusual to go out after your day ends with people from work.
Join a Club or Team
If you are looking for a new community in Canada, it might require you stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Clubs and sports often welcome new members to their associations. Do you or members of your family have a hobby or interest? Do some online research and reach out to a club or team that is right for you.
Places of Worship
If you are an individual of faith, places of worship are a good place to meet individuals who share your faith and values. When you move to Canada, we recommend you do some research and find the right place for you. Once you have found that place, get to know your congregation and you’ll likely find yourself making friends with little effort!
Volunteer
Canada is a country that relies heavily on the commitment of volunteers. Whether for major events or simply to keep organizations running, there are a wide variety of potential volunteer opportunities in communities across Canada. There is something for everyone, from volunteering at a running race, to helping a non-profit. Not only will you meet people, but you’ll be doing some good at the same time!
Newcomers Canada is confident that if you take a chance and try something new in your community, you will find people from all walks of life who share your values and who you will soon be able to count on as your new Canadian support system!
