Research Your New Canadian Employer
It is unfortunate, but not all employers are created equal. In fact, Newcomers Canada would recommend that you always undertake some preliminary research regarding your new or potential employer. When you are reading up on your new employer you should be looking for any signs that they may not be who, or what they say they are. A few things to look for include:
Websites: If your employer is legitimate, they will most often have a reputable website that includes contact information including a phone number, email, and most often an address.
Consider where you found the job posting: Did you find the job posting on a legitimate website? Was the source a reputable organization? (Check out our job board for great Canadian employers!)
Ask for an offer letter: If the employer is legitimate, you should be able to request an offer letter. The letter should include information regarding your compensation, new role, and other terms related to your contract.
Canadian Companies Should Not Pay in Cash
If your new employer in Canada is offering to pay you in cash, they are likely not legitimate and are breaking the law. There are some exceptions to this rule, including service positions where you can expect gratuity, but more often than not you should not accept cash from an employer. When you begin your new role, you should understand how you are being paid. Will you be receiving direct deposit? Will they be giving you a cheque? Either way you should always expect a paystub that outlines the details of your compensation and shows that taxes and deductions have been appropriately dedicated.
Newcomers Canada is committed to supporting immigrants and new Canadians as they navigate the process of moving to Canada. We have a job board on our website that has opportunities to work with legitimate employers and we host events online and in-person where employers will meet with you and discuss your opportunities.
